Staying Healthy During the COVID-19

Effective vaccines will prevent many of us from getting physically sick or even losing our lives from COVID-19. But what about the effects on our mental health?

The number of Americans seeking help with anxiety and depression has skyrocketed in the past year. Financial worries, job uncertainty, isolation and bereavement are some key factors. There is light at the end of the tunnel and there are lots of practical things we can all do to keep our minds healthier. Read on to find out how you can help yourself.

Take Regular Exercise

Jogging, swimming, cycling and walking are anaerobic exercises. There’s plenty of proof that these reduce anxiety and depression. What’s important is to come up with an achievable routine so that some form of exercise always fits into your day. Experts suggest people take at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise or 15 minutes of intense exercise a day. That is just to stay healthy. More is better.

There are plenty of ways to help motivate yourself. Here are some ideas:

  • Keep a record of your daily exercise
  • Use an App which tells you how far you’ve run or walked
  • Exercise at home using an online class
  • Interact with a friend or relative and compare your exercise achievements

Eat Well

A well-balanced diet provides all people need to stay healthy: energy to keep active throughout the day, nutrients for growth and repair and it helps to prevent diet-related illness, such as some cancers.

Eating a Mediterranean diet can help. This involves consuming a high quantity of vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains and nuts. It also incorporates olive oil as a healthier kind of fat. Here are some other recommendations:

  • Eating fish, seafood, eggs or chicken twice a week
  • Regularly consuming moderate amounts of dairy products like cheese and yogurt
  • Eating very limited amounts of red meat and sweets desserts

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

This is not only about the length of time you spend sleeping. It’s vital to get good quality sleep on a regular basis so you feel at your best when you wake up. Getting the right amount of sleep will give you these benefits:

  • A reduction in stress and improvement in your mood
  • Less frequent periods of sickness
  • Maintenance of a healthy weight
  • An ability to think more clearly and get along with people better

There are plenty of things you can do to help improve the quality of your sleep. These include removing phones or computers from the bedroom. Even when you aren’t using them, they can emit a blue light which can adversely affect your sleep patterns.

You could also try the following:

  • Avoiding excessive intake of alcohol before turning in for the night
  • Eating several hours before you go to bed to allow food to digest properly
  • Sprinkling drops of lavender oil on your pillow
  • Incorporating some mindfulness exercises into your routine

Connect with Nature

Spending time outdoors in green spaces is good for both your mental and physical wellbeing. Growing fruit or flowers, exercising outdoors or being in the company of animals has many positive effects. These can be things like:

  • Reducing stress and increasing relaxation
  • Improving your mood
  • Improving your physical health and self-worth
  • Helping you make new contacts and connections

Getting out in the fresh air will also mean you will increase your vitamin D intake from the sun. It’s thought that more than 40% of American adults may have a vitamin D deficiency. The vitamin is vital for our total well-being.

Stay in Touch with Friends and Family

Having regular contact with the people we love has been one of the hardest things to achieve during the pandemic. Video chats have really helped fend off feelings of loneliness and isolation. Too much interaction on social media is not good for our mental well-being. In fact, it can make us anxious and depressed.

A better way to stay connected is to use visual means through our phones or computers. In this way, we can see and talk to several members of the family at the same time. It’s far better to see and hear who you’re connecting with. Avoiding too many text messages is a good idea. That’s partly because it’s sometimes possible to read negatives into them which the sender may not have intended.

We need to acknowledge some of the tragic consequences of COVID-19. At the same time, we can draw strength from the distribution of vaccines which work. We can also take steps to nurture our own precious mental health.
